Ely Play Well But Start With a Defeat

17th May 2018
The school football team kicked off the season with a tough game away at Robert Arkenstall. Playing into the wind against a team of elegant giants, ESJ found the going tough in the first half. The home team's silky passing and quick counter attacks caused problems early on, while the St John's forwards found it difficult to get a foot in the game. It was no surprise when Haddenham took the lead and, despite some good pressure from Ely, soon found themselves two goals up.

As the half wore on though, St John's hit back. They fashioned a string of corners and dangerous balls into the box, and created a great chance that forced an incredible save from the home goalkeeper. However, just before half time and somewhat against the run of play, Haddenham scored the decisive third goal following a swift break.

In the second half, Ely were perhaps the better team. With Jasmine and Thomas stout in defence, and Sam bustling with energy, the home team found themselves up against an unbreachable wall. However, in attack, St John's just lacked the final killer ball to open up the opposition.

Overall this was a very good performance against a team who finished second in the league last year and who will no doubt be in a similar position at the end of this season.
