St John's Leave it Late

27th April 2017
ESJ - 6
Wilburton - 4
In an evening of high drama, ESJ continued their winning start to the season with a fantastic late victory over a determined Wilburton side. Two goals from Oscar and one from Charlie gave the hosts a comfortable 3-0 lead at half time.
Although Wilburton pulled one back early in the second half, George soon restored the three goal advantage. A long throw looped into the box and he stooped to head it in, only for the ball to ricochet off his knee and into the bottom corner.
At this point, the fans on the sidelines were expecting a comfortable victory, but the plucky visitors had other ideas. Bursting forward like baked beans from a machine gun, the Wilburton players overpowered the Ely defence. The home fans looked on in disbelief as the ball thrice struck the back of the ESJ net for four apiece.
Ely were resurgent and hungry, like a bunch of werewolves re-awakening at full-moon. They stormed forwards but to no avail. The Wilburton goalkeeper was in fine form, making four incredible saves, and it appeared that the draw was inevitable.
But then, with just two minutes left and with Mrs Sutcliffe almost collapsing on the sidelines, Ely finally won the game. An own goal from the unfortunate goalkeeper was followed by a hat-trick strike from Oscar and the points were safe.
