Communicating in the Digital World
Strand 1 - Digital Communication and Sharing Information
Overall Learning Objectives
  • Know that multimedia includes sound, text and graphics and can be used to communicate in different ways.
  • Begin to be able to organise data (e.g. documents, images, sound files etc.) by saving in appropriate folders, locating and opening files
  • Understand the different ways that messages can be sent; email, text, letter, phone, messaging, blogging. Begin to consider the advantages of each.
  • Understand that many different people can contribute to a Learning Platform or blog.
  • Understand there are rules to help them stay safe when online (see e-safety section).
  • Recognise that changes can be made to documents to improve appearance or add new ideas or re-using in other ways.
Communicating in the Digital World
Strand 2 - Producing and Editing Media
Overall Learning Objectives
  • Begin to understand there are a variety of tools in a graphics package and they each have a different purpose (pupils should discuss reasons for choice of tools).
  • Begin to understand digital still or video cameras can capture an image and the need to frame an image and keep the camera still.
  • To understand that animation is a sequence of still images.
  • Understand that devices have stop, record and playback functions and that sound can be recorded on the computer as a sound file.
  • Begin to understand that music and sound can affect mood and atmosphere.
Exploring the Digital World
Strand 1 - Collecting, Analysing, Evaluating Real World Data/Problem Solving
Overall Learning Objectives
  • Begin to understand that ICT can be used to sort items and information.
  • Begin to understand that ICT can be used to create, display and change graphs quite easily.
  • Begin to understand that if data has not been entered accurately it cannot be used to provide correct answers to questions.
  • Know that digital devices such as thermometers and dataloggers can be used to show external changes.
  • Understand that ICT can help us solve problems.
  • Begin to understand that ICT (the internet) gives rapid access to a wide variety of information and resources.
  • Begin to understand and talk about how the information can be used to answer specific questions and begin to develop key questions and find information to answer them.
  • Talk about their use of ICT and other ways of finding information (e.g. books, newspapers).
Shaping the Digital World
Strand 2 - Control and Programming
Overall Learning Objectives
  • Begin to understand that devices respond to commands and be able to talk about devices in the home that are controlled by commands.
  • Begin to understand that algorithms are a sequence of step by step instructions (not necessarily on a computer). A computer program is the implementation of algorithms which are used to tell the computer or digital device what to do, in the way that you want.
  • Write and test simple programs using algorithms and use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs.
  • Debug a program to correct errors.
  • Understand that precise and unambiguous instructions are essential when controlling electronic devices to achieve a specific outcome.
e-Safety
Overall Learning Objectives
  • Know that there are e-safety rules to follow.
  • Begin to understand that some internet information may not be true.
  • Begin to understand some online content is unsuitable and many sites are aimed at selling.
  • Know that some information is personal and should not be shared.
  • Know it is important to respect others when communicating online.
