Daily handwriting task

By now you have learnt all of the handwriting joins. This week we would like you to create a leaflet all about handwriting and good joining. This leaflet will be aimed at children who are joining KS2 and are just starting to focus on their joins. It is up to you how you present your leaflet, maybe you want to write out rules for good handwriting, you could show some of the joins in a table, maybe you want to write out full sentences that show the joins. Maybe you could include the sentence that you learnt a couple of weeks ago that has all the letters of the alphabet in it. It is up to you. Please spend a few minutes working on your leaflet everyday.

Daily comprehension task

Over the week we would like you to have a go at answering the comprehension questions about Apollo 13. Once you have done this please write a newspaper report about Apollo 13, if you want you could also do some of your own research to add more information to your report.

Year 4 Home Learning

Monday 29th June - Friday 3rd July

Dear Year 4,

Can you believe that after this week we will only have two weeks left of being in Year 4 together! You are all doing so well. We know what a strange situation this is, it's certainly not something that we ever experienced when we were your age! Keep going, keep trying your best. We can't wait to see you all again, even if it's not until September. We will all be here ready to welcome you back as soon as we are allowed to.

Remember, when your working at home book is full, you can drop it off at the office and we will have a look at all the great work you have done. We will also give you a new one.

Daily handwriting task

We are going to repeat last weeks handwriting job but this time use a different book. This can be any book that you like, fiction or non fiction. Choose a page or two, these will be your handwriting pages for the week. Everyday copy out three or four sentences from the book. Once you've done that have a look at what you have written and think about all the things that we try to do when we write - neat, legible, correct joins, a sensible sized finger space. Now write one of your sentences out again and aim to make it even neater. Do this everyday (you can choose different sentences each day!).

Daily comprehension task

Over the week we would like you to have a go at answering the comprehension questions about garden birds. Once you have done this please write 8 different questions that you could ask someone about this text. So you are writing your own comprehension questions. Once you have finished both these jobs please draw or paint a picture of your favourite garden bird!

Year 4 Home Learning

Monday 15th June - Friday 19th June

Hello Year 4, we have been sent some super stories from our unit on fantasy writing. We have put a few up on our Year 4 blog page on the website, do go and have a look at them. If you haven't shown us your story yet and would like to please do ask someone to take a photo of it (if it's in a book) and email it to us via the School Office.

Home Learning

We would like you to aim to do the ongoing daily tasks plus an English and a maths task every day. Try to complete two curriculum tasks at some point during your week as well.

Ongoing Daily Tasks:

- reading time (at least 25 minutes)

- daily comprehension

- handwriting practice (10 minutes) - a new, arty way of handwriting!

- Times Tables Rock Stars (at least 15 minutes)

- spelling practice (10 minutes)

Daily handwriting task

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog - this sentence contains all the letters of the alphabet. Your job this week is to write this sentence out three times each day. This is handwriting practice, your handwriting should be neat, joined and legible with no unnecessary loops or swirls. See the example below.

Daily comprehension task

By now you should be familiar with what sort of questions are asked in a reading comprehension. Your job this week is to write your own comprehension questions. You can use any text that you want - a book, a poem, a newspaper report, a non-fiction book. Write three comprehension questions each day, these questions should be thought about carefully, you want to find out what the reader understands about the text. Don't just ask obvious questions 'What is the character's name?' is an obvious question. 'Why do you think the character is unhappy?' is a more sophisticated question and would need the reader to understand the text well and think hard about the answer.

Maths Overview: Decimals

We are continuing our work on decimals this week.

I have also included some Y5 arithmetic calculations for those who would like to give them a go!

Year 4 Home Learning

Monday 8th June - Friday 12th June

Hello Year 4,

We hope you enjoyed having an extra day without any school work last week!  While you were at home enjoying the sunshine, Mrs Grant, Mr Henson and I were in school getting ready for some children to come back to school.  We are teaching in school every day again (which is quite strange as we have been used to working at home some of the time) and we are looking forward to the time when you will be back in school too.

Take care and stay safe,

From Mrs Hambley

Home Learning

We would like you to aim to do the ongoing daily tasks plus an English and a maths task every day. Try to complete two curriculum tasks at some point during your week as well.

Daily handwriting task

We loved seeing all the creative handwriting art last week, thank you to all of those who sent us pictures of their art work! This week your handwriting challenge is similar but a bit different! We would like you to create an animal out of joins. If you are not sure what this means have a look at the examples below. Yours does not need to be the same animal as these, be as creative as you like. We drew the outline of our animals first and then used the name of the animal to create it.

Daily comprehension task

Please do part of a reading comprehension each day. There are two to do this week, you can choose which one to do first. You might want to do half of one each day. Please write out the questions and answers in your book.

Maths Overview: Decimals

We are beginning a new topic this week - decimals.  We are revising work on tenths first.

For the next few weeks your literacy jobs are a little bit different. Have a look at the document below and it will explain what you need to do. Year Four

Week 7

Monday 18th May - Friday 22nd May

Hello Year 4!  We have nearly made it through to half term and you deserve a holiday because we know how hard you have all been working!

Daily Spelling Practice Reminder

We have realised that not everybody has been practising their spellings every day so we are going to talk you through what you need to do.  This job is a 5-10 minute job and is an independent activity (you will not need a parent!).

Set 1 - year 3/4 spelling list

Set 2 - word family

Set 3 - grammar based spelling pattern (e.g. suffix -ly)

Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

First of all, choose a set of words to practise from the spelling list attached below (Spellings 18-5-20.pdf) and copy them all into your book.  Look at the first word and say it out loud.  Cover the word so that you cannot see it and then write it out 3 or 4 times (this is also a handwriting practice).  Check that you have spelt the word correctly - if you have, move on.  If you have made a spelling mistake then do the same look, say, cover, write, check process again.  Continue until you have written out the whole set of words.  Once you are confident with this, put each word into an interesting sentence.

Remember, we would like you to aim to do the ongoing daily tasks plus an English and a maths task every day. Try to complete two curriculum tasks at some point during your week as well.

Ongoing Daily Tasks:

- reading time (at least 25 minutes)

- daily SPAG task

- handwriting practice (10 minutes)

- Times Tables Rock Stars (at least 15 minutes)

- spelling practice (10 minutes)

Daily SPAG task

This week your job is slightly different. Please choose a coloured pencil (or pen) this will be your 'purple pen' for the week. After each piece of writing please edit your work. You need to focus on spelling, punctuation, finger spaces and handwriting. If something isn't legible (easy to read) please write it out again. Try to do all the things that we do when editing at school to make your writing as good as possible. Do this editing job everyday, after each piece of writing.

If you don't have any of these things to edit in your writing - well done! Your job is to 'level up' your writing. Find a way to make it even better, maybe by adding in a sentence or two, including a well chosen adjective, verb or adverb, varying your sentence length. Writing can always be made better so find a way to make yours even better than it already is.

Maths Overview: Money

We are carrying on with money this week.  We plan the maths so that each lesson follows on from the lesson the day before so always begin with Monday's lesson and work your way through.  If you miss Wednesday's lesson because you are busy then do that one on Thursday and catch up before you move on.

Year 4

Monday 4th May - Thursday 7th May

Dear Year 4,

Please look after your grown ups! They are doing a super job. This is a strange time for everyone. You are probably a bit fed up at times and maybe you miss your friends and the fun of school. Well your parents are just like you (but a bit bigger!). They are probably missing their friends and jobs too. Some of your parents are having to still do their jobs while they look after you AND while they try and teach you. Teaching is hard! Teachers have to learn how to do it, sometimes it takes years. But your parents haven't been told how to do it they are just trying to figure it out all by themselves!

So our message to you this week is to please be kind to your grown ups. Look after them, tell them that they are doing a good job, give them a cuddle and tell them not to worry. You are all superstars and we hope to see you very soon.

From,

Mrs Grant, Mrs Hambley and Mr Henson

Hello lovely children! We are starting week four of no school now and if you add that to the Easter holidays that's six weeks of no school! I am missing seeing all of your smiling faces and talking to you all. I thought about coming to visit you all at your houses and waving through your windows but it would take me a really long time to wave through 60 windows! Instead I came up with the idea of reading you a story. Our book is called To Be a Cat and is written by someone called Matt Haig. I will upload a new chapter everyday for you to listen to. So get comfortable and scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will find me!

I hope you are all ok and I REALLY hope that I will be able to see all of you again very soon.

Hello Year 4 - we miss you all!

We hope you had a successful first week and that you managed to complete most of the tasks we set.  Hopefully, you are beginning to establish a home learning routine whilst also spending lots of time outside in the garden (and doing one or two jobs to help the grown ups!).

We have an extra challenge for you this week! Have a look at the document called 'Rainbow Challenge' at the bottom of the page.

If you haven't already spotted them, there are lots of new things on the 'Closure Curriculum' tab at the top of the page. Please have a look at these, there are lots of interesting and fun things for you to explore and do!

  • Maths Corner for some fun maths games and activities. Can you think of your own maths game? If so send your idea to Ms Fellows (via the office) and it might be featured on the school website next week!
  • Taskmaster Challenge - I'm not going to tell you what this is, you'll have to watch the video to find out for yourselves!
  • Singing with Mrs Turner for some super ideas for songs to sing and how singing can be used to help you to learn things.
  • Easter/Spring Garden Challenge for a fun creative challenge.

As well as the 'Ongoing Daily Tasks' listed below, we have also planned...

- 5 maths tasks

- 5 English tasks

- a menu of 10 'curriculum' tasks - we suggest you select and work on two of these tasks each week

Ongoing Daily Tasks:

- reading time (at least 25 minutes)

- a SPAG task

- handwriting practice (10 minutes) - this is new, please see the Daily Handwriting Practice document at the bottom of the page

- Times Tables Rockstars (at least 15 minutes)

- spelling practice (10 minutes) - this is another new one, see the Spellings document below

Maths Overview:

There is a calculation warm up again this week and another daily maths job linked to telling the time.  Remember that learning to tell the time can be very tricky so ask the other members of your family to help you if you are struggling with this.

English Overview:

This week's jobs are linked to different kinds of poetry.

See the attachment below.

Other Curriculum:

A selection of two tasks from the menu provided. You can find these on the pdf document below called 'Curriculum week 2'. Midweek Update

Hello Year 4 - we hope you are all safe and well. Thank you very much for the work you have sent to us - we have loved receiving it! We have seen a super Lockdown list of activities, a beautiful rainbow and a great Easter cake (saved in the correct folder on Purple Mash). Keep up the good work everyone!

Reading

If you are struggling to find books to read at home, go to the Oxford Owl website where you will find a selection of ebooks. Click on 'My class login' and enter our classname: Year4rocks and our password: Panda... Happy reading!

Always, Sometimes, Never (see maths plan)

If you can find a way to write down whether you think Alice's statement is always true, sometimes true or never true and save it in Purple Mash, I would love to know what you think!  You could try using the Blank Email Template in 2Publish Plus in English. Try saving your work in the folder called 'Alice' and if that doesn't work, save it in your 'My Work' folder.

Hello Year 4!

We have been working hard to get this page ready for you. We are in the "development" stage with our Year 4 page and we still need to check it with our Purple Pen! So please be patient with us while we edit it and add more information for you. We will try our best to add in any missing information or useful links over the next few days.

Purple Mash Update: 26th March
If you are saving work in Purple Mash, please save it in your 'My Work' folder not the 2022 folder (unless we say otherwise).
Remember that if you are 'exploring' different tools, your work does not need to be saved.  Also, remember that any work you save in Purple Mash can be seen by us so it must be appropriate.
Take care, Mrs Hambley
