Year 6 Autumn Blog

Welcome to Year 6!

We will post photos and information here on a regular basis, so you can keep up to date with what we are doing in class.

Expectations for weekly homework:

Spelling - see photo below for each week's words.
New words will be given on a Friday, and tested the following Friday. We will not send their spelling books home, as they are needed in class for daily practise, and weekly testing.

Maths and English - Weekly consolidation of work we have been looking at in class. This will be set each Thursday, and completed homework (in books) must be returned by the following Wednesday. Maths and English homework will be alternated weekly. Answers to the homework will be posted here on a Monday. The children should mark their own work.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN TO GET SOME SUPPORT IN A HOMEWORK CLUB AT 12:15 EACH FRIDAY. This is not an opportunity for children to complete homework, but to ask any questions they have before completing it at home.

Reading - daily.
Once a week, get an adult to sign your sheet to show that you have been reading at home.
See below for a Year 6 guide to reading at home.

Autumn 2 PE (Both classes)
Monday - indoor - Dodgeball
Wednesday - outdoor - Quick Sticks
English

Our first unit of work for English is to write a non-chronological report, based on beetles. Our book that we are reading is Beetle Boy by M.G Leonard. What better way to kick-start our work, than by heading into the nature garden and making a beetle bucket. We are hoping to encourage these fascinating creatures to come and visit the homes we have made for them.
Maths - Cycling Squares.

We played a game that used our knowledge of square numbers. It was based on an NRich problem. We had a good go, and used lots of problem solving techniques, but we couldn't quite solve the problem. The resilience the children showed, and the perseverance, were amazing.

Could you have another try at home?

The link to the problem is here:

Send in any successes to your teacher!
English

This is what writing looks like in Year 6. Quiet, calm and totally focused!
Science - Classification

Year 6 went exploring today and used their scientific skills to classify some plants they found in the nature garden.

We also checked our beetle buckets while we were there, but alas, no beetles to be found. We did however, find plenty of spiders and worms!

Anti-bullying week 2024- Choose Respect!
Year 6 took part in lots of anti-bullying week activities, all based around the them of 'Choose Respect'. We had lots of fun creating odd sock designs and thinking about ways we can show respect in different places and towards different people. Finally, we made some amazing banners and filmed our very own music video to go with Andy and The Odd Sock's song, Choose Respect!

Science - Microorganisms

What is mould? Why does bread grow mould? Where does bread need to be stored, in order to inhibit mould growth? What conditions does mould need to grow? Lots of questions that Year 6 are currently exploring!
English - Adverts

The children enjoyed writing adverts, using some super persuasive techniques, to advertise their chosen toy.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Science - Microorganisms.

Huge excitement this morning as we looked at our mould experiment under the microscope. The children likened the intricate, magnified structure to snow flakes, space, and crystals!
Happy Christmas!

This week, the children have created posters using persuasive features to sell a sleigh to Santa! We have enjoyed their creative flair.

The children have also shown off their knowledge in our Christmas Quiz this week. Mrs Turner. who won the staff quiz last week (how many times have I mentioned that children?) was quiz master this time, and thoroughly enjoyed the event. Well done to all who took part. Your team work and friendship was lovely to see.

Today, hot chocolate, marshmallows, and popcorn for 40. The children said Mrs Pitt and Mrs Turner should open a cafe!

One more day to go before a well deserved rest for everyone.

We want to wish all of our children and their families a Happy Christmas, and a wonderful New Year.
