Below is an outline of the Admissions process, a school day, school uniform, school dinners and our prospectus has more detailed information.

Admissions:

All Admissions to the school are by the Admissions team at Cambridgeshire County Council. They also control any waiting lists. Please see their contact details below;
(They also have lots of really useful information!)

Children start school in the September of the school year in which they become five, we hold open events in the Autumn term for the following years intake. i.e. If starting in September 2027, events will be held September/October/November 2026.

Our catchment area is the triangle bounded by the south side of West Fen Road to its junction with Downham Road; the south-west side of Downham Road from its junction with West Fen Road to its junction with St Mary's Street; the north side of St Mary's Street from its junction with Downham Road to its junction with Cambridge Road; the west side of Cambridge Road; and the by-pass. Uniform

All pupils at Ely St John's wear the school's uniform. This is primarily emerald and grey.

Overall

  • Our branded emerald green school sweatshirts can be purchased from  https://www.totalclothing.co.uk/collections   (see below for more details)

  • Branded cardigans are available to order from the school office.

  • The sweatshirts are to be worn with white shirts or white polo shirts and grey or black trousers, shorts, skirts or pinafore dresses.

  • An old shirt or apron is needed for art activities.

Summer

  • Children may wear sandals with closed toes and white or dark plain socks.

  • In summer girls can wear green and white striped or checked dresses. This should be worn with dark shoes and black, grey, brown or dark green tights or socks.

Winter

  • The school is on an exposed site so coats should be brought into school as we make the most of being able to go outside in all weathers!

  • Make sure your child brings a coat to school and has raincoats and wellies available if wet or snowy.

PE Kit
School PE kit consists of black or green shorts, yellow t-shirt and plimsolls.
  • In summer, children need suitable shorts, T-shirts and plimsolls for outdoor activities.

  • In the winter tracksuits are allowed and trainers for outdoors.

  • Your children should come to school wearing their PE kits on PE days rather than changing clothes during the day

  • Long hair must be tied back.

  • For swimming, one piece swimming costumes rather than bikinis for girls and trunks rather than long shorts for boys. Goggles are allowed.

Please remember: Label all items of clothing

High heeled or backless shoes or clothing attachments which could cause damage to other children are not appropriate. No make-up should be worn for school. Children with pierced ears should wear studs for school. For safety reasons, no other earrings or jewellery should be worn. We do not allow earrings for PE. If teachers consider it dangerous to do a particular PE activity with earrings in, your child will have to take them out or sit out the activity. Alternatively we would strongly advise you to send your child to school without earrings on regular PE days.

The Friends' of Ely St Johns hold Second Hand Uniform sales periodically throughout the year

Curriculum Overview

At Ely St John's it is exciting and varied. The children spend much time developing their key skills within activities that interest and motivate them. The development of skills is placed into practical, real life and meaningful contexts.

We aim to provide a rich environment for learning both inside and outside our school buildings.

We value the outdoors as a learning resource as much as the classroom and take great pride in our nature garden, allotment, outdoor classroom, Foundation Stage courtyards and other outside areas.

Learning outside the classroom is something which we value highly and are strongly committed to,  our garden is used by all year groups and in all areas of the curriculum.

The curriculum is planned yearly to ensure consistency across classes and progression through the years. You will find the overall topic frameworks for each year group and termly topic webs on the year group pages on the school website.
