Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing
At Ely St John's, we want to provide an effective and enjoyable teaching and learning environment, where children can flourish. We aim to promote the mental and physical health and emotional wellbeing of all our staff and pupils. Wellbeing is at the forefront of the school’s PSHE programme, and promoting good mental health is a priority.
We approach the welfare of our pupils positively; all our staff reinforce the school's values and ethos. We want our children to stay happy, feel secure and enjoy being in school in whatever activity they are taking part in.
We aim to:
- respect each child as an individual, giving them the confidence and self-esteem to develop their talents to the full
- develop the whole child intellectually, morally, socially, spiritually and physically
- develop an effective three-way partnership between children, parents and school
- promote children’s positive self-esteem by encouraging them to think positively about themselves and to accept their uniqueness
- provide opportunities for the children to feel valued and important by creating an awareness of the positive contribution they can make towards school and the community
All our children should feel able to talk freely and openly to any member of staff if they have any worries or problems of any kind on a school or personal level. Staff always respond to children appropriately, offering advice, support, guidance and reassurance in line with our other policies, including our safeguarding policy.
Wellbeing
Wellbeing is about our thoughts, feelings, emotions and ability to react to life. A good sense of wellbeing is feeling ok and able to cope, even when life or situations are challenging.
Sometimes our wellbeing is affected by things out of our control, like an illness or a stressful family situation or crisis.
When our wellbeing is affected and we don’t feel able to cope, this can lead to mental health concerns, such as sadness, depression and unhelpful thoughts, that can stop us from enjoying and coping with daily life.
