R.E.

At Ely St John's our RE curriculum is designed to run alongside the Cambridgeshire Agreed Syllabus for RE. The Syllabus is updated every 5 years and we adjust our plans accordingly when this happens.

Our RE units are planned using a Thematic Approach whereby students revisit and build on knowledge learnt through these different themes as they move through the school. The 6 themes are:
  • Celebrations/Festivals
  • Our World Around Us
  • Special Places
  • Creation
  • Substantive Knowledge
  • Important People
Below is the overview for the teaching of RE across the school.
Ely St John’s
RE Curriculum Vision
Principles of our curriculum:
- To develop awareness of the fundamental questions raised by human experiences, and of how religious teachings can relate to them.
- To respond to such questions with reference to the teachings and practices of religions and other belief systems, relating them to their own understanding and experience,
- To reflect on children’s own beliefs, values and experiences in the light of their study.
- To develop religious literacy and enhance children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Impact of our Curriculum:
Children will be given the knowledge and skills to flourish both within their own community and as member of a diverse and global society. Children will be prepared for life in modern Britain by developing Religious Literacy (the knowledge of, and ability to understand religion, belief, practices, spiritual insights and secular world views). Children will be able to think, reflect and respond to the ‘bigger’ life questions using enquiry based and experiential learning. They will consider their own spiritual beliefs and those of others locally and in the wider world, thus building on their Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development.
