ESJ Squeeze Past Little Thetford

21st April 2017

Little Thetford 2 – 3 Ely St John’s

ESJ won their first match of the football season after a tense and exciting match at Little Thetford. Goals from Charlie and Michael put ESJ 2-0 up at half time, although the first half was a lot closer than the scoreline might suggest. Little Thetford had plenty of chances but they couldn’t beat George. The ESJ keeper – making his debut – leapt around the goal like a hyperactive gazelle to repel wave after wave of Little Thetford attacks.

It was clear that the next goal would be crucial, and it came early in the second period. A long throw looped into the box and Daniel thrashed it home powerfully for 3-0.

At this point, the ESJ team should’ve been able to put on their slippers and enjoy a celebratory nap. However two breakaway goals from Little Thetford swung the game back in favour of the hosts. The pressure grew like a really angry rash. Tackles flew in. Desperate blocks were made. Fingernails were bitten. Rabbits’ feet were stroked. Ladders, umbrellas and black cats were given a wide berth.

Finally, despite several minutes of stoppage time, the whistle blew and ESJ clung on for an outstanding win.
