Girls Grab Glory!

5th July 2019

On Friday the 5th July the Ely St Johns girls football team entered a tournament at Witchford College. They played 6 matches in a round robin format with all teams playing each other.

In the first match we beat Little Thetford 2-0 with both goals being scored by left winger Eloise.  Chioma and Sofia defended superbly. Next we were paired against a strong Haddenham A team. Thanks to some excellent defensive work by Mary the game finished goalless. The third game was a local derby against Ely St Marys. Sharp shooting by Mary and Beth ensured that we won 2-0 with yet another clean sheet from our super stopper Eve ably assisted by Yasmin who was as solid as a rock in defence. We then had a tough three matches in a row with no breaks in between. Fordham A were the next opposition with Astrid getting on the score sheet along with Eloise and Mary. This game finished in a comprehensive 3-0 win. Next up were Fordham B, one of the strongest teams in the tournament. After going a goal down early on, Mary crashed in a free kick with the last kick of the game to grab a vital equaliser 1-1. Our last game was against Haddenham B but despite injuries mounting up the girls finished with a commanding performance and a great 3-0 win, with goals from Gracie and 2 from Astrid.

Once all the points were added up ESJ were level on points with Haddenham A at the top of the table. Goal difference was also identical as was goals scored. The trophy was therefore shared between the 2 teams who were so evenly matched when they played each other in the tournament. What a great end to the school football season and it is fantastic to see a trophy in the cabinet.
