Magic ESJ Finish 3rd.

On Friday the 8th November, Ely St Johns Year 6 football team travelled to Witchford College to compete in a tournament against 13 other teams. Our first game was a convincing 2-0 win against Fordham A with goals from Archie and Brendan. Next up was Wetheralls A and despite several chances for Ely the game finished 0-0. The defensive partnership of Reece and Oliver proved to be solid as a rock through out. The 3rd game was against Robert Arkenstall A which looked like being the toughest game of the group. The match was delicately poised at 0-0 with chances at a premium for both sides, until super sub Brendan steered the ball over the line to give ESJ a deserved 1-0 win. The final group game was a must win encounter against Westfield. Goals from Logan and Brendan and a great defensive display from Josh ensured a 2-0 victory and qualification for the knock out stages.

Our opponents for the semi-final were Wetheralls B who had won every game in their group to qualify. Ely started much the stronger but just couldn't find the back of the net. The game ended as a 0-0 draw which meant we now faced a dreaded penalty shoot out. Unfortunately luck was not on our side and we lost 2-1. Finally we had a 3rd place play off derby against Ely St Marys. Once more after a cagey match that could have gone either way the final score was 0-0 largely due to a fine goalkeeping performance from Nico. After both teams had taken their 5 penalties the scores were still level at 3-3, so it went to sudden death which Ely won to claim a well deserved 3rd place in the competition. The team didn't lose a game or concede a goal in open play and were a credit to the school as always.
