The Highwayman by Alfred Koyes

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

For the past few years, as part of literacy, Year 5 have made a detailed study of this epic narrative poem. It is always popular as a focus for study, with its hugely dramatic themes of love, murder, jealousy and etrayal.

The poem is long and really amounts to a short story, and although it is accessible to children at every level provides enough 'meat' for even very able children to be inspired.

First hand evidence - an interview:

As part of our Second World War topic, we are learning about the Diary of Anne Frank. We have slowly but surely become completely captivated by this unique and fascinating, but ultimately sad, story of a young girl and the diary she wrote between 1942 and 1944, whilst in hiding from the Nazis who occupied her home city of Amsterdam.
