Reading Comprehension:

-      This week we would like you to write a review of a book you have read recently. Write the title of the book and the author. Talk about the main events and what you liked about it. Was there a character that you particularly liked or disliked? What made it a good story to read? Who would you recommend it to? How many stars out of 5 would you give it? You can use the book review template to help you.

Science Overview:

Week 7: Where in the World?

LO: To identify inventions and discoveries from all over the world linked to scientific ideas

1. Open the presentation and answer the following questions:

Who invents or discovers things?

Where are inventors from?

Think about our classroom equipment: how did people write before pencils and ink were invented? (Think back to our topic on Ancient Egypt)

2. Next, read the ‘Where in the World’ cards and complete the activity sheet. If you cannot print the sheet, copy it into your book. Choose the level of challenge that is right for you (Mild/Medium/Spicy).

3. Once you have completed the activity, talk about what you have found out.

What have you found really interesting? What new thing have you learnt?

Challenge: pick an area of the world and design an invention that would make living there easier, considering climate and terrain in that country.

Science Overview:

Week 6: Concave and Convex Mirrors

LO: To investigate how images change in concave and convex mirrors

1. Open the presentation and introduce the words ‘concave’ and ‘convex’. Use a spoon to demonstrate how your child’s image is different either side of the spoon.

2. Next, work through the presentation. Use the examples on the presentation to think of a question that you would like to find the answer to about concave and convex mirrors. Fill in the activity sheet. If you cannot print it, then copy it into your book. Choose the level of challenge that is right for you (Mild/Medium/Spicy).  You can use a spoon for the concave and convex mirrors. It has the same effect!

3. Once you have completed the experiment and answered your question, continue to work through the presentation. Support your child to talk about concave and convex mirrors.

Challenge: Draw ray diagrams for concave and convex mirrors to show how the light is reflected differently from each mirror.

Week 5: Journey to the Centre of the Earth

LO: To describe what Inge Lehmann discovered about Earth’s core

1. Open the presentation and talk about what is below our feet? What is under ground?

2. Next, introduce Inge Lehmann and read through the fact cards.

3. Then, using the fact cards, fill in the activity sheet. If you cannot print the sheet, copy it into your book. Choose the level of challenge that is right for you (Mild/Medium/Spicy).

 4. Continue to work through the presentation.

 5. Finally, if you have time, complete the paper model of Earth and its core using the Earths Layers Interactive Visual Aid.

 Challenge: Create a word search, which uses words linked to the topic of the Earth’s core.

Science Overview:

William Smith

Week 4: Fossil Finders

LO: To explain how fossils can be used to find the age of rocks

1. Open the presentation and introduce William Smith and his work that led to the discoveries of fossils.

2. Next, recap on Sedimentary rocks and complete the experiment if you have the resources. You can always do this at a later date if you don’t have the materials to hand now.

3. Explain William Smith’s ideas on the principal of fossil succession and use the Index Fossils Fact Sheet to see how Smith could identify the age of rocks by the fossils he found inside of them.

4. Continue to work through the presentation, explaining Smith’s creation of the geological map of Britain. After, complete the geological challenge. If you cannot print it, then copy it into your book. Choose the level of challenge that is right for you (Mild/Medium/Spicy).

5. Once you have completed the sheet, continue to work through the presentation. If you were able to set up the experiment, have a look at what has happened inside the bottle and chat about it with your family member.

Challenge: Make a folding book out of paper and use it to write a biography of William Smith. Include information about what he discovered or make fossils using salt dough or playdough. Label them using their scientific names.

Music – Go to purple Mash/Tools/Music and Sound. Open 2sequence. Play around with positioning different musical sounds on the timeline. What kind of sound can you make? Think about the timing of the piece. There’s a bar you can slide at the top of the page to make your piece faster or slower. Can you add different instruments and keep your musical piece playing in a steady rhythm? Save your work in class/2023/2dos/2020-06-12/2sequence

Marie Curie

LO: To explain how Marie Curie’s work on x-rays helped us identify bones

1. Open the presentation and explain who Marie Curie was.

2. Work through the presentation until you arrive at the Bingo game. If you cannot print the game, draw it into your book. Have fun!

3. Continue to work through the presentation and complete the X-ray Explanation sheet. If you cannot print it, then copy it into your book. Choose the level of challenge that is right for you (Mild/Medium/Spicy).

4. Finally, tell your family member 5 things that you have learnt today.

Challenge: Create your own ‘True or False’ quiz about Marie Curie. Write five statements about Marie Curie-some of them true and some false. Test your family members. You can use the fact sheets to help you.

Persuasive Letter Writing

Reading, planning and writing a persuasive letter to the adults in your family.  There are some examples to read and ideas to get you started.  See resources below.

Reading Comprehension:

We are going to include a weekly reading comprehension for your child to complete. There are always 3 levels of challenge to choose from. Mrs Turner and Mr Henson’s class are used to calling the challenges mild, medium and spicy. Your child can choose the right level of challenge for them. They only need to complete one of the challenges. Read through your chosen comprehension carefully. Underline unknown words. Use a dictionary to help you work out what they mean. Finally, answer the questions about the text. Try to answer in full sentences. Try to use evidence from the text to support your answer.
